2 Samuel 7

Read 2 Samuel 7 – Sometimes God says no.

David’s heart is still with the Ark of God.  He wants to do more to glorify the Lord.  He wants to build the Ark of God a proper home of cedar.  David shares his vision with Nathan the prophet, who is agreeable to it – until the Lord speaks to Nathan and tells him it will be David’s offspring and not David who will build a home for the Ark of God.  David’s response is a prayer of thanksgiving.  David recounts all the things God has done for him with awe.  He glorifies the Lord, praising his Name, reminding the Lord of His promises and past deliverance.

This inspired me to spend some time in gratitude and praise for all Jesus has done in my life, for who He is, and for my hope in Him.  Focusing on the awesomeness of the Lord draws me closer to Him.  Pastor John Piper is known for saying:  “The Lord is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”  David’s prayer is a beautiful example, and I encourage you to do the same.

Psalm 119:17-32

Monday!  Monday!  Read Psalm 119:17-32 – Then read it again, slowly, as if the words are yours.  Our psalmist is leaning in to the Lord’s word.  He is refreshed.  He is learning to live brand new and it is wonderful!  “Be good to your servant, that I may live and obey your word.  Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” 119:17-18….”I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word .”119:28  Have you ever felt so bogged down by life that you cried out for wisdom?  “Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing your instructions.”119:29  Yes, I can be my worst enemy, I can justify and get lost in lying to myself – and yet, here is this privilege – this privilege of God’s Word – this privilege of prayer, always ready to lead me forward.  “I will pursue your commands, for you expand my understanding.”119:32  Beloved, Jesus has so much for you!  Lean in, ask, pray, confess and repent… living clean and refreshed is the absolute best!🤗🛁🙏🏻📖🙏🏻🛁🤗

2 Samuel 6

Read 2 Samuel 6 – David moves the Arc of God, and it goes poorly.  Did you notice, he didn’t pray first, and he moved the Arc of God with a cart, rather than have it carried by men as the Lord designed it.  The oxen started to slip and Uzzah reached out to steady the Arc on the cart and the LORD struck him down for his irreverence.

David got angry, then he became afraid of the Lord.  We haven’t seen this ever before, but as most parents know, sometimes you have to come on strong to keep things in line.

The Arc of God was entrusted to Obed-Edom. It was there for 3 months and the Lord blessed the house of Obed-Edom.

David retrieves the Arc of God, with great reverence and rejoicing as he brings it in to the City of David.  He is dancing in the streets before the LORD with all his might!  Everyone is overjoyed, except Michal, who thinks David’s behavior is common and disgraceful.  Her scolding invited David’s harsh response, and she never bore a child.  This repeated message of the admonishment should be our take away.  Reverence is important.  Do not overstep.

Michal, still on chapter 6.

I wonder about this girl, Michal.  She loved David, and he fought to pay her bride price by meeting King Saul’s request to bring him 100 Philistine foreskins(1 Sam 18:20-28).  She saved David’s life by warning him that King Saul (her father) was set on killing him and helped him escape (1 Sam 19:11-17).  During David’s absence, King Saul gives her to another man in marriage, Palti of Gallim(1 Sam 25:44).

I don’t know the details of this…. Was she considered shamed by David’s abandonment?  Did she still love David? Where was her heart as she was being given to another man in marriage?  Did that change over time?  When David demanded her back as a statement of General Abner’s loyalty (2 Sam 3:13) did she go willingly?  Her husband, Palti, followed her weeping, until the mighty Abner told him to go home… they must have loved each other, for him to weep after her, right(2 Sam 3:16)?

Now, we see such a change of heart in Michal.  She loved David in the beginning, and now she despises him(2 Sam 6:16).  David comes in elated and generous to all, wanting to bless his household in his joy, and she admonishes him in disgust (2 Sam 6:20)… friends,  beware of bitterness!  It will change you into someone you never thought you could become. King David will have none of it.  He puts her in her place and admonishes her to remain childless for the rest of her life(2 Sam 6:21-23).

But my heart is stirred for her story.  Did jealousy destroy her?  In the end she was one of seven wives, and, let’s face it, hearts don’t change over generations.  Jealousy is something we all must guard against.  Was she a spoiled child who never outgrew her princess upbringing?  Beloved, let’s all learn from her.  Gratitude could have written a very different story for Michal, and it will write a very beautiful story for you the more you seek it.

2 Samuel 5

Read 2 Samuel 5 – David’s reign as King over all of Israel is official – He was 30 years old at this time and reigned for 40 years (5:4).  Have you ever waited a long time for something to come true?

King David is anointed king (5:3), he overtakes the Jebusite land and makes it the City of David(5:7), he extends the city and becomes more and more powerful, KIng Hiram comes alongside David with gifts of timber and workmen, AND THEN, King David realized the Lord had confirmed and blessed him as king over Israel(5:12).  Sometimes the truth of God’s hand of blessing is all around you, but you have to let go of fight/survival mode before you can accept it.  Gratitude is the cure.  Gratitude changes your lens.

The Philistines learn David is King, they set out against him.  David asks God and the Lord says, yes, I will certainly hand them over to you (5:19).  David has all the power and authority, yet he remains humble under the Lord, setting a timeless example for us to cling to.👑😍🙏🏻⚓🙏🏻😍👑

2 Samuel + Psalm 119

Read Psalm 119:1-16 – We are taking a little interlude from 2 Samuel today.  2 Samuel reveals the actions of David, as he lives close to the LORD.  I also want to share the heart of one who walks close to the LORD, the Psalmist, Davids, mine, and ultimately, yours.

The author of Psalm 119 is thought to be David by many scholars, Nehemiah and Asaph are also possible contenders.  It is the longest chapter in the entire bible.  It is an acrostic of the Jewish alphabet, which is 22 letters, represented in 22 stanzas, each is 8 verses long… it is magnificently constructed and for those of an academic mindset, you will love digging even deeper!

We will read 2 or 3 stanzas on Mondays since Mondays beg for refreshment of soul. To find it, close your bible, aim for the very center, and open it.  If you hit Proverbs or Isaiah, turn back a little.  That’s the who, what, where, when and why, so let’s dig in, shall we?

As always, pray first.  My prayer is simply:  Heavenly Father,  Bless me with supernatural wisdom and insight as I open your Word to Psalm 119.  In Jesus name, amen.

“Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD.  Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts.”  119:1-2 Oh, YES LORD!  Faces are coming to mind… brothers and sisters aglow with your joy.  My own joy fills my heart with gratitude because you, Jesus, give me the desire to know you more and more.  119:7&8 remind me that my very life is a thank you note to Jesus and his grace follows me when I slip off course.  119:11  Yes, LORD, yes!  I have hidden your Word in my heart, but I want more.  Jesus, help me to retain more (119:16).  Meet me in my attempts to memorize your Word and bring it to the forefront of my mind throughout the perils of this life.  Oh Lord, yes.  A life set on you is a life of joy.  Thank you for today, Jesus.  Amen🤗💝🤗🙏🏻🤗💝🤗

2 Samuel 4

Read 2 Samuel 4 – Flashback to the vow David made to Jonathon in 1 Sam 20:15 “ treat my family with this faithful love, even when the LORD destroys all your enemies from the face of the earth.”  Now, recall what happened in 2 Samuel 1 when the Amalekite man took credit for killing Saul, and was punished by death.

In Chapter 4, two of Ishbosheth’s own captains sneak into his room and kill him while he sleeps.  Ishbosheth was already defeated in spirit at the news of Abner’s death, yet they murdered him, and brought his head to David, seeking reward.  They received the same reward as the Amalekite man.

In vs. 4:4 We are introduced to Jonathon’s lame son, Mephibosheth, but no more is said about him.  Hang on to this verse, we will learn more about him in upcoming chapters.

David’s integrity is evidenced in Chapter 4.  He keeps his word to Jonathon, and does not approve of revenge against Saul’s family.  Can you think of a time in your life where doing the right thing was unexpected or inconvenient, yet you did it?  Integrity is a priceless virtue.

2 Samuel 3

Read 2 Samuel 3 – So much happens in Chapter 3!

The division between Judah and Israel is a long war (3:1).

Ishbosheth accuses the mighty Abner of adultery, and Abner has had it!  He switches teams and contacts David in a stunning turn of events.

David wants his wife back, Michal.  She was his first wife, the daughter of king Saul, given and taken away by him(see 1 Samuel 18).  I thought that was a rather romantic way to prove Abner’s loyalty. Abner brings Michal, consults with the elders of Israel and Benjamin, reminds them in vs 18 that David was chosen by the Lord, and arrives in Hebron with great feasting and celebration.

All is well, except…. Joab, King David’s general, has allowed vengeance to fester in his heart over his brother’s death (2 Sam 2:23), and tricks Abner into returning and murders him.  David deeply mourns Abner, making those who murdered him mourn in the funeral procession too.

Revenge is a terrible desire.  It will eat you alive and cause you to do horrible things.  David acknowledges that Joab and his brother are too strong to control, and entrusts their fate to the Lord… which is a far wiser thing to do in the face of injustice. 🙏🏻✌ 🙈🙉🙊🙏🏻✌

1 Samuel 30

Read 1 Samuel 30 – In the adventure of these verses, we really get a glimpse at David’s heart.  He returns with his men to their home in Ziklag. They discover their town burned to the ground by the Amalekites.  All wives and children have been stolen, and everything of value was also taken by the raiders.  Vs. 4 says ‘the men wept until they could weep no more’, and I found this to be so tender, but then David is in danger of being stoned by his men – grief has a violent side that longs to lash out at the injustice of what was taken.  David navigated their rage by turning to the Lord for wisdom (30:6-8).  The LORD assured David of victory, so David and his 600 men set out against the Amalekites.  The pursuit was so aggressive that 200 of the 600 men were too exhausted to cross the brook, and stayed behind.  After victory, when they met up with the 200 again, some of David’s men didn’t want to share all that was recovered, but David reminded them the victory belonged to God (30:23).  He also sent gifts back to Judah, and all the other towns he and his men had visited.  God loves a cheerful giver.😭🤺😊🙏🏻😍💑💰

1 Samuel 29

Read 1 Samuel 29 – This is a quick chapter.   The Philistine army is marching out against Israel.  King Achish is behind the troops with David and his men (29:2).  The Philistine commanders do not trust the Hebrews and demand they go back.  The king does not agree,  but he honors the commanders and tells David to return.  David isn’t happy about this,  but he does as king Achish requests.   What do you think would have happened had David gone into battle?  When circumstances in your life don’t go as planned,  do you trust that God is still in control, and has purpose in the roadblock?   The Lord certainly had great purpose in sending David back to Ziklag…. But that’s in our next chapter.  Today has enough troubles of its own. Let’s close with Proverbs 19:21 MANY ARE THE PLANS IN A PERSON’S HEART, BUT IT IS THE LORD’S PURPOSE THAT PREVAILS. 📊📉❤☝️❤📈📊

1 Samuel 28

Read 1 Samuel 28 – David is called into service by king Achish.  He puts David over his entire security detail, as the kings personal body guard for life.  Saul learns of this impending threat, and makes one more foolish choice.  He continues rejecting the Lord.  Instead of seeking the Lord with repentance, he seeks out a medium to summon Samuel from the dead!  The medium is reluctant and then downright fearful when she realized what she had done.  Samuel is not pleased, but delivers the dismal truth. Have you ever been in trouble and looked everywhere but up? Jesus is RIGHT THERE just waiting to hear from you. ☝️🙏🏻☝️❤🙏🏻☝️🙏🏻
