Sunday Drive with NancyJean

Sunday Drive with NancyJean

September 26, 2021

The plan…We will hit the road at 6:30am, Sharp!  The reality was a little more like 8:40am.  It’s still a good start.  Anytime we can skate through Corona Del Mar before 9 is a good start.

We took the coast down through Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, Laguna, Dana Point … we shot through Capo Beach, next to the railroad tracks that run alongside the beach on one side and the cliff that Kevin restored in the mid-1990’s from a land slide on the other.  I used to drive my Z28 Camaro as fast as it would go along that stretch when the road was blocked off for the construction… well over 100mph. NancyJean can feel it, but she is content to cruise closer to the speed limit.  We press on towards San Clemente, the seaside town that seems to hold its eclectic beachy vibe despite the progress of brand name coffee houses with drive thru service that have inundated most other places.  We pass a Taco Bell and give a curtesy wave to our family that live in the neighborhood just beyond it.

At last, our first stop, Surfin Donuts, three double espresso’s, a ham and cheese croissant for Kevin, a blueberry fritter for Noah, and my treasure, the best glazed donut in the entire world.  I have to close my eyes at the first bite.  There is nothing like it… my teeth sink through as though it is a cloud, the sweetness is gentle and cozy.  It is perfect.

We get back on the bikes and take a few turns and are back on I5 South.  I call this part the Autobahn, the highway goes through the military land of Camp Pendleton, so there are no on or off-ramps for a long stretch.  The speed limit seems to be a vague theory at best.  I hug the slow lane, and my sweet husband and son tolerate me.

At the sign for hwy 76, we merge off, cutting through Oceanside, past hwy 15, past the fruit stand where we will buy honey on the way back home.  The traffic gets progressively more absent, the road is becoming ours.

There are mountain peaks within sight.  A layer of clouds lingers about.  My son points them out.  My husband says we will be in them soon enough.  My mind remembers Jesus referring to himself as the stairway between heaven and earth (John 1:51), as the Led Zepplin song, Stairway to Heaven, competes.

The curves are fantastic as we climb higher.  It is so misty that I need to wipe my shield off from time to time.  I try raising it and that is better, although I have to blink a lot.  It gets thicker; I can barely see my husband in front of me.  We are in the cloud.  We are a part of heaven on earth.

We emerge and pull over for a photo.  You can see a few peaks in the sea of clouds in the distance.  Our road ends at the turn off for Palomar Observatory to one side and Lake Henshaw to the other.  We stop for more stretching and photos.  It is sunny and green up here in the thick of the forrest.

My husband leads us down towards Lake Henshaw.  At a vista point two dogs greet us with nervous barking.  Their owner calls them back, though they still had a lot to say.  We are high above the lake and it is so pretty.  It is much warmer on this side of the mountain.

The curves are broad and the pavement is fresh and smooth.  We are the only ones on this side; there are vistas every turn or two… it is a feeling of space.  We have space and time and motion in a setting of evolving beauty and the technical challenges that make riding so engaging, downshifting and throttle, lean left, press right… there is everything and nothing going on at the same time, and the outside world doesn’t exist.  There are no wars, no politics, no bills to pay as we escape to this wonderland.

Josie’s Hideaway is the end of the road for this trip.  There are bikes galore parked outside and a band called Whiskey Ridge playing in front of a giant American Flag.  We are a motley crew, in our riding gear, yet we blend right in.  We dined on sandwiches and sodas – I don’t drink soda too often, but on a long ride, sugar and caffeine bring a welcome dose of energy.

The Hideaway sits on a horseshoe entrance.  Kevin says to go left as we leave because he wants to see the group of BMW motorcycles.  I go right, my head is still in the clouds, he just laughs and catches up to me.

We are back on hwy 76, but it is an entirely different stretch with fresh sights and curves.  Before too long we are at the fruit stand with the fresh honey that inspired this journey, and on our way back home soon after that.

We are quiet on the ride back, apart from an occasional complaint about hazardous drivers and sore muscles.  We stay on the freeway, rather than take the scenic Pacific Coast Highway… It’s been a wonderful day.

John 2

Read John 2 – Like a groom inviting his bride to join him in life, Jesus invites us to join him in miracles.

Jesus’s first recorded miracle is the turning of water into wine.  It’s a miracle and he could have accomplished it any number of ways, but he invites the servants into it.  He tells them to fill the jars with water, draw some out and present it to the master of ceremonies.  The servants got to join Jesus in this miracle, though I doubt they had an inkling as to what was going on.  Likewise, you are invited to join Jesus in wonderful things you may not understand this side of heaven.

Next, Jesus clears the temple.  The temple had become a place for profit, when it should be a place of sacrifice and worship.  We see righteous anger here.  This was something foul in the temple and Jesus cleared it out.  In Jewish custom, before passover the house is cleaned so not a speck of dust remained – the dust being symbolic of leaven, and leaven being symbolic of sin.

Invite Jesus to reveal anything in your life that is in need of cleaning so you are free to join him with a pure heart.💗

1 Kings Reflections

Reflect on 1 Kings – Praise the Lord!  You have just finished the book of 1 Kings. What did you learn? Who did you meet? Let’s look back at:

DAVID, a man after God’s own heart, his life concluded in 1 Kings, yet his legacy continues through the generations.

SOLOMON, who started strong, seeking wisdom above all else, yet finished poorly,  being led astray by the company he kept.

REHOBOAM and AHAB revealed the importance of heeding wise counsel, and that evil will be dealt with.

ELIJAH the prophet showed us a life reliant on God, and he showed us that even those closest to the Lord can grow weary… the Lord will meet you in even the darkest of emotions.  Look for his comfort and rescue. What else did you receive?

Tomorrow we will move to the New Testament with the book of John.   It is the 4th book of the NT, between Luke and Acts. But for today, may gratitude and quiet reflection fill your study time.  BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD. I WILL BE EXALTED AMONG THE NATIONS, I WILL BE EXALTED IN ALL THE EARTH. Psalm 46:10

1 Kings 4

Read 1 Kings 4 – The order is noteworthy.     Solomon is wise,  yet he does not try to do it all.   Wisdom says delegate.   Wisdom says we are better together. Verse 20 encouraged me.   We are in the most turmoil I can ever recall, but praise Jesus, I am content with plenty to eat and drink…. it really is that simple, especially when trouble is all around… grab hold of  Philippians 4:8 FINALLY, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, WHATEVER IS TRUE, WHATEVER IS NOBLE, WHATEVER IS RIGHT, WHATEVER IS PURE, WHATEVER IS LOVELY, WHATEVER IS ADMIRABLE – IF ANYTHING IS EXCELLENT OR PRAISEWORTHY – THINK ABOUT SUCH THINGS. 💖🙏🏻📖☝️📖🙏🏻💖

1 Kings 3

Read 1 Kings 3 – What do you want?   What an enormous question.  Imagine the Lord God Almighty comes to you in a dream and says,  “What do you want? Ask, what shall I give you? ”  Solomon is pretty smart, even before God makes him the wisest man to ever live.   He considers his life, what is needed and what is lacking. The Lord is so pleased, he adds more than Solomon even asked for… Beloved, God never blesses ‘just a little’.  This is the same God who loves you, and who sent rescue in Jesus for you.  What is your heart’s desire? SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND ALL THESE THINGS WILL BE ADDED TO YOU. Matthew 6:33💖🙏🏻⚓🤓

Read 1 Kings 2:13-46

Part 2 – Read 1 Kings 2:13-46 – King Solomon ties up the requests of his father with decisive discernment.  Our chapter closes with the words, “So the kingdom was now firmly in Solomon’s grip.”(2:46)  May you be both decisive and discerning as you step into the lead of your life.  What needs to be dealt with or cleaned up?  p.s. I am NOT advocating for executions, haha – rather,  sit down in prayer and ask Jesus what needs to be dealt with.  Does your life bring him glory?  Take stock of your life and establish your kingdom.🙏🏻🤲📑💝📊👸🙏🏻

1 Kings 2:1-12

Read 1 Kings 2:1-12 – Part one of two… or maybe three.

We are privileged to have an account of King David’s last words, his legacy is handed to his son, the newly appointed King Solomon, who will be known as the wisest man to have ever lived.  These are words we do not want to rush through.

“I am going where everyone on earth must someday go.  Take courage and be a man.” David prepares Solomon(2:2) and my heart translates:  Let me go – carry your own torch.  Grief can redefine a person.  Do not hold so tightly to those who have passed on before you that you miss out on leading your own life.

David charges Solomon to adhere to God’s laws, and gives him a few practical matters regarding people who must be dealt with:  Joab (2 Samuel 3) and Shimei (2 Samuel 16) for treachery – and Barzillai for kindness(2 Samuel 19).  King David dies and is buried with his ancestors in the City of David.

I just need a moment, how about you?  We have walked alongside this lowly shepherd, who killed lions and bears, and was chosen by God Almighty.  David, who slayed the giant, Goliath the Philistine, who waited patiently for King Saul to die, though he spent great effort hunting David and wanting him dead.  David, who would lead Israel through turmoil, who would sin and repent… King David, the man after God’s own heart has completed his time on earth.

1 Kings 1

Read 1 Kings 1 – We are rejoining the great King David today.

David is in the sunset years, old, but still king and capable of calling the shots.  His son, Adonijah, overrides his father’s position and makes himself the self appointed king… Just as his brother, Absalom, attempted in 2 Samuel 15.

We get some insight into this audacious behavior as we learn that David never disciplined his son(1:6).  Dads – you matter so much!  Your presence in you little children’s lives will affect them for all of theirs – for better or worse.

Nathan… remember Nathan?  He was the prophet who confronted David on his sin with Bathsheba (2 Sam 12).  He now teams with Bathsheba to remind David of his vow to make Solomon the next king.  David makes Solomon king, he is anointed, the rams horn is blown, and Solomon takes the throne.  Adonijah’s ruse is fully exposed, his guest flee the banquet, and he pleads with King Solomon not to kill him.

Life is busy!  Good things and not so good things are happening all around us. David declared, “As surely as the Lord lives, who has rescued me from every danger,”(1:29).  Beloved, may you look in your past and see God’s rescue throughout, and use that to light the way into your fearless future.

1 Peter 5

Read 1 Peter 5 – Treasure’s galore – There is great godly wisdom in this short passage.

Elders, lead well, with a willing heart. Jesus has entrusted these people to you.  Young ones, accept their authority (youth is so full of pride), live humble.  And then, two of the my favorite morsels of wisdom:

First, cast all your cares upon the Lord, for he cares for you(5:7).  Isn’t that awesome?  Over and over the bible instructs to fear not.  But when worry does creep in, what does one do?  That’s right – hand it right over to the Lord!

Second, Peter states the fact, so there is no need to be surprised, but prepared and alert because the devil prowls like a lion, looking for someone to devour.  He instructs believers to stand firm against him and be strong in the faith(5:8-9).  There is something empowering about being ready.  So, be ready.

Peter closes with a summary, “My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you.  Stand firm in this grace.(5:12).”

Friends, will you stand firm in His grace?  Write that on your heart today.  Stand firm in His grace.  It’s a great calling.

Tomorrow we will pick up in the life of King David with 1 Kings.  It is the book after 2 Samuel, around the ⅓ mark of the Old Testament.

1 Peter 4

Read 1 Peter 4 – Jesus, Jesus, Jesus –

Whenever you are deciding right from wrong, look to Jesus.  Whenever you are in a season of trial, and Satan starts whispering doubt, look to Jesus.  He is the Author and Finisher of our faith(see Hebrews 12:2 “Looking to Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”) – Jesus is like no other, for he has literally “been there, done that” in terms of suffering, betrayal, and temptation. There is nothing you may face that Jesus did not encounter.

In verse 4:2 we get a picture of freedom that may be a challenge to imagine to the immature of faith, yet when you take on the attitude of being anxious to do the will of God, life takes on a delightful, powerful, purposeful dynamic!

“The end of the world is coming soon.  Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.”(4:7)  Talk about a call of duty!  What does your prayer life look like?  Don’t keep it on hold for desperate situations – No, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.

Use your God-given gifts wisely(4:10).  If you don’t know what yours are, volunteer for everything; they will rise to the surface.  And again, Peter stresses that suffering will happen.  Trust your life to the God who created you, for he will never fail you(4:12-19).
