Genesis 6

Read Genesis 6 – We tend to mess things up.

The population is building, and wickedness is thriving.  The population is not purely human either.  We are only told a little bit about these “sons of God”, these “Nephilites”.  Scholars suggest they are fallen angels, and that they were corrupting human DNA with these unnatural unions with the daughters of men (human women).

The bible doesn’t say a whole lot about them, and I don’t see any walking around today, so I’ll just add it to my mysteries I get to learn about in heaven file.  Paul assures us that one day we will know in full, even as we are fully known (1 Corinthians 13:12).  I rather like the idea of story time in heaven – when all the gaps and more are filled in.

At any rate, times are bad on earth.  Verse 6 tells us, “So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth.  It broke his heart.”  Ouch – oh LORD have mercy, I am so sorry for the times I have broken your heart!

Global changes are necessary.  First, God limits our lifespan to 120 years, :3.  Second, God calls for a “do-over”.  Noah is a righteous man who walked with the LORD, only he and his family, and pairs of every animal will be spared and called to repopulate earth, :18-19.  He instructs Noah to build a boat from cypress wood.  You have to understand how this must have looked to the neighbors, remember it had never rained before, and Noah is building this giant boat in the middle of dry land.  Noah trusted God, and did as he instructed.

Beloved, stay the course no matter what it looks like to the neighbors.  Stay faithful to God and build your life on His Word.  Storms will come, as will His rescue.🛳⚓💖🙌💖⚓🛶

Genesis 5

Read Genesis 5 – Ready for a treasure hunt?  There is treasure buried in the genealogy of chapter 5.

Don’t think the unusual names and extraordinary life spans are reasons to glaze over.  Remember, the atmosphere of our planet was different before the flood of Noah (Gen 2:5-6).  People lived close to a thousand years.

Written language did not exist then, all history was spoken,  passed down from the patriarchs. Adam would have been grampa to most of the generations prior to Lamech (Noah’s dad).  And Adam’s son, Seth, would have continued through the generations,  even knowing Noah 34 years prior to his (Seth) death. (Thank you,  agapebiblestudy, for doing the math for me.)

When reading something repetitive,  ‘he lived, he begot, he died’, it is really important to note any variations.   Meet Enoch (:18-24).  In verse :22 it says “ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD THREE HUNDRED YEARS.”  Everyone before and after simply “lived”, but Enoch walked with God. His life on earth is also significantly shorter, 365 years, then, he didn’t die in the ordinary sense.   The bible says:  ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD; AND HE WAS NOT, FOR GOD TOOK HIM,  :24.

Beloved,  as you read Chapter 5, would you also pray that God give you wisdom and understanding? These ancient writings are rich with truth and insight.  They will give you greater understanding of who God is, and where you fit in the story of life. 🙏🌎☝🌫☝😍🙏

Genesis 4

Read Genesis 4 – Human nature is a messy thing.

Meet Cain and Abel, sons of Adam and Eve.  Cain was a farmer, and Abel was a shepherd, :2.  Both honor God with offerings, but Cain did so casually, offering some fruit, while Abel offered the best portions of the firstborn lambs, :3-4.

The Lord knows the difference between someone who throws $5 in the basket at Christmas, and one who is delighted to send what the Lord puts on their heart (generally thought to be 10%) with joy and gratitude as soon as it hits their account.  The Lord did not accept Cain’s gift, and he reacted with pride and bitterness.  The Lord is aware and discusses the matter with Cain, :7.  But Cain does not heed God’s warning, instead he takes his bitterness out on his brother, Abel, and murders him, :8!  The Lord approaches Cain after, giving him the opportunity to confess.  Cain responds with arrogance, and the Lord issues punishment.  Notice it is punishment with protection.  The Lord puts a seal on Cain and anyone who kills him will be punished sevenfold.

Beloved, take a good look at Cain’s reaction to his sentence.  He still does not repent!  He only complains.  Cain goes on to lead a life, marries, has children, and generations to follow.

Meanwhile, Adam and Eve are blessed with another son, and name him Seth.  Seth grew up and had a son named Enosh.  AT THAT TIME PEOPLE FIRST BEGAN TO WORSHIP THE LORD BY NAME, :26b.  Hallelujah!  Cain’s offspring was selfish and boastful, but Seth’s legacy is one of worshipping God by name.

Beloved, who are you?  As God looks at the truth of who you are, what does he see?  If it’s time to confess, then do it NOW!  Repent and become a legacy maker!

Genesis 3

Read Genesis 3 – Consider temptation – Consider it for what it is and the one behind it, the devil himself.  Subtlety is his gift.  He did not approach Eve with his horns sticking out, threatening her life to sin… he simply asked, “Did God really say…,” :1.

Beloved, let’s all start to take that whisper seriously.  We all know good from evil.  We know what temptation is.  We need to stop chatting with it!  Picture those horns and threats when you hear the whisper.  If you fall for it and succumb to the temptation, the same enemy who whispered will shout accusations and condemnation at you.  Recognize the battle, no matter how innocently it is introduced.

Notice where Eve went wrong next. She exaggerated by adding, “or even touch it,” :3, to God’s instruction, and Adam was standing with her this whole time!  Silent!  (:6)  Why didn’t he confront the serpent?  Why didn’t he protect Eve?  Men, we need you.  Not only did Eve need Adam, but as a result of the fall, God has given him rule over her (and this applies to all of us forevermore too).  “YOU WILL DESIRE TO CONTROL YOUR HUSBAND, BUT HE WILL RULE OVER YOU,”  :16.

In verse :20 God shifts from talking to the serpent, Adam, and Eve – to atonement.  Verse :21 gives us the first blood sacrifice for sin.  Verse :22 shows us the triune relationship once more, as God discusses a plan to guard us from eternal damnation.

Beloved, we were made for eternity, but if we step into eternal life as sinners without atonement there is no hope.  Jesus is the final blood sacrifice for sin.  FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD HE GAVE HIS ONE AND ONLY SON, SO THAT EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.  John 3:16.

Beloved, you do not need to hide from God.  Lay your sin at the foot of the cross and let Jesus be Lord and Savior over your life.  This is for believers, but if you are reading this and have not surrendered your life to Christ… what are you waiting for?🍎🐉💔📖💖🌎🐑

Genesis 2

Read Genesis 2 – on the seventh day,  God rested.  God rested, even though he doesn’t need rest.   Do you think he rested to teach us to work hard, rest and restore ourselves to himself?

Next we get more details on creation.  The order is important. The fact that rain didn’t exist is noteworthy, :5.  Also, consider that Adam was created from dust and God’s own breath, :7.  And then, the Garden of Eden, including the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, with the warning not to eat from the latter.  And finally, God causes Adam to sleep, takes a rib from him, creates a woman and gives her to Adam. This was done in the garden, amongst beauty and order.

Remember, Adam was created from dust and God’s own breath… Beloved, notice how the essence of men and women were a part of our very origin – men in the raw wilderness – women in the garden amongst beauty and order. Both are made in God’s image, yet reflect Him uniquely. And when the two join together they are united into one, :24. This is God’s incredible design of us.   It overrides genetics and makes two become one in marriage… we leave our parents and join together,  :24.

Beloved, take some time to reflect and thank God for his unique and wonderful design of you, and your spouse if you have one,  with such care and intricacies, and desire for relationship with Him. You are His precious creation. 💕💝💖☝💖💝💕

Genesis 1

Read Genesis 1 –  It’s a day for new beginnings.  Our beginning is marvelous.  It is simply mind boggling and awesome, much like our Heavenly Father himself!  IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH. 1:1  Isn’t that something, that the heavens were created at the same time.  We don’t get any details on what went on in the creation of heaven though, plenty of time for that when we get there, right?  But what the Bible does give us on the creation of the earth is one WOW after the next!  I was taken in by the third day… it’s like a day on fast forward because an entire cycle of tree/plant/seed repeat takes place.  Then, on the fifth day we get:  THEN GOD SAID, “LET THE WATERS SWARM WITH FISH AND OTHER LIFE.  LET THE SKIES BE FILLED WITH BIRDS OF EVERY KIND.” 1:20  I could sit with a sketch pad all day long and maybe come up with a fish, but I have plenty of examples to get started, God came up with ALL fish, other sea life, and birds of every kind in a day starting with nothing…. Think of the intricacies of color, texture, scales or feathers, and life, heart, lung, brain, cell….  I can only marvel at how awesome God is.  And on day six… WOW.  He made us in his image.  Drop the mic, right?  How privileged are we to be made by our Creator in his own image?  The first hint of the Trinity, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, is plainly stated here.  THEN GOD SAID, “LET US MAKE HUMAN BEINGS IN OUR IMAGE…” 1:26.  I encourage you to look at this in other versions too.  (I am using my NLT today).  Beloved, marvel at God.  Delight yourself to try, just try, and grasp how Great and Wonderful our Lord is.  Praise Him!  Let’s start this year with awe and wonder.☝🏞🍓🦭🌳🙆‍♂️☝

Psalm 148-150

Read Psalm 148-150 – Let’s finish BIG!  2020….2021…2022 Life is so uncertain, but God does not change.  Let’s close out this year with eyes on our Wonderful Lord.  Let’s celebrate, sing, make a joyful noise as we celebrate with praise and worship our Awesome Lord God Almighty!  Adonai, Yahweh, Jesus, our Banner, our Great High Priest, our Healer, our Great Physician…. Keep going with His names… celebrate the different facets of God through His many names… Beer Lahai Roi, the God Who Sees Me.  Emmanuel, God With Us.  Hosanna…. Notice how David draws in every created thing in 148 to praise the LORD: all angels, all the armies of heaven, sun, moon, twinkling stars, skies, vapors, ocean creatures, elements of fire, hail, snow, clouds, wild animals, kings, judges, all people… look around and give glory and praise to God for everything you see – it is all from Him.  In Psalm 149, David urges us to sing a new song.  Beloved, may your adoration and praise for God be your new song.  FOR THE LORD DELIGHTS IN HIS PEOPLE; HE CROWNS THE HUMBLE WITH VICTORY.  LET THE FAITHFUL REJOICE THAT HE HONORS THEM.  LET THEM SING FOR JOY AS THEY LIE ON THEIR BEDS. 149:4-5  When I was a child, we would bang pots and pans together at midnight on New Years Eve – making a joyful noise to ring in the new year… I didn’t understand it as a song of worship to God, the one who makes all things possible!  But I do now, and you can be sure, there will be celebration with purpose tonight.  PRAISE HIM WITH A CLASH OF CYMBALS; PRAISE HIM WITH LOUD CLANGING CYMBALS.  LET EVERYTHING THAT HAS BREATH SING PRAISES TO THE LORD! 150:6  Happy New Year, Beloved.  Thank you for walking with me through God’s Word.  It is such a privilege for us all that He lets us know Him by it.  Tomorrow, we will start at the beginning with Genesis.  Praise the LORD! 🙌🙌🙌💖🙌🙌🙌

Psalm 147

Read Psalm 147 – Beloved!  Beloved!  It is another great day – starting with praise on my lips.

“Praise the LORD!  How good to sing praises to our God!  How delightful and fitting!” 147:1

Look at the wonderful order in Verses :2-4 of Jewish exiles, Gentiles everywhere and the entire universe – He counts the stars and calls them by name, :4.  Our God cherishes His creation.  “How great is our LORD!  His power is absolute!  His understanding is beyond comprehension!” :5  This is so precious to me.  I can drift to feelings of insignificance – I can convince myself of some downright stupid things – But God comprehends.  He gives me a moment to wallow and He rescues me ~ joy shines all the more after sorrow.

“He takes no pleasure in the strength of a horse or in human might.  No, the Lord’s delight is in those who fear him, those who put their hope in his unfailing love.”  :11  Our Abba keeps things so simple for us.

Verse :17 made me laugh.  It does feel good to throw a rock across a lake – and moving that image to God hurling hail like breadcrumbs draws me to his sweetness in connecting my heart to his.  Next time you throw a rock, I hope you feel that much closer to God.🌨⚾️💪❤💪⚾️🌦

Psalm 146

Read Psalm 146 – You will find the book of Psalm in the basic center of your Bible, really.  Just close your Bible, eyeball the center, open it and you’ll find it – after Job and before Proverbs.

Okay, now read 146 before reading my thoughts on it.  Beloved, you always want to hear what The Holy Spirit has to say to you through Scripture first.

Honesty day, Christmas is a difficult season for me.  I get lost between the Santa Claus fairytale I was raised with and the majesty of what really happened when Christ our Savior was born.  And the cherry on top is that no one even knows when that was – it’s not recorded – December 25th is the day we commemorate it – but only God knows.  Somewhere between all the “have-to’s” and “should’s” my joy takes a beating.

But God saw this coming long ago and inspired King David to pen Psalm 146.  It starts and ends with praise.  It is filled with recall of the goodness of God. “He made heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them.  He keeps every promise forever.  He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry.  The LORD frees the prisoners.  The LORD opens the eyes of the blind.  The LORD lifts up those who are weighed down.  The LORD loves the godly…. :6-8.”   These words take my eyes off of me and put them on my glorious LORD!

Beloved, you may run into a dry spell, you may grow weary, but rest assured, Jesus has not gone anywhere!  He is the same yesterday, today and forever – Let your troubles fade as you take in the certainty of the LORD.

Acts 27

Read Acts 27 – Sailing through the impossible with God will keep your head above water.

Paul sets sail for Rome and in verse :2 we find a tiny word “us” that suggests Luke was with him.  Remember, Luke is the author of Acts.

Paul is a prisoner, but his concession to be allowed to go ashore and visit friends (:3) suggests he was revered and trusted.  If you recall from previous chapters, Paul is no stranger to the seas, having taken several missionary journeys.  When the winds get difficult Paul addresses the ship’s officers about it (:9-12).  They do not heed his warning and press on.  The results are perilous, the sun and stars were blotted out and all hope was gone (:20).

Paul addressed the men again, an angel of the Lord assured Paul he would stand before Caesar, and that God, in his goodness, would also grant safety to everyone sailing with him.  Paul said, “So take courage!  For I believe God.  It will be just as he said. But we will be shipwrecked on an island.” :25-26.  The night was still quite dramatic, and Paul urged all to eat something.  Paul took some bread, gave thanks to God before them all, and broke off a piece and ate it.  Then everyone was encouraged and began to eat.

Beloved, sometimes things escalate and the very best thing is to get back to basics.  Thank God.  Eat. The Lord keeps things very simple for us.

Our chapter ends with, “So everyone escaped safely to shore.”  They lost everything but their lives, the cargo, the ship, yet not one perished just as God told Paul.  What is the Lord telling you through this chapter? 🚢⚓🥖🙌🍞⚓🚢
