1 Kings 4

Read 1 Kings 4 – The order is noteworthy.     Solomon is wise,  yet he does not try to do it all.   Wisdom says delegate.   Wisdom says we are better together. Verse 20 encouraged me.   We are in the most turmoil I can ever recall, but praise Jesus, I am content with plenty to eat and drink…. it really is that simple, especially when trouble is all around… grab hold of  Philippians 4:8 FINALLY, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, WHATEVER IS TRUE, WHATEVER IS NOBLE, WHATEVER IS RIGHT, WHATEVER IS PURE, WHATEVER IS LOVELY, WHATEVER IS ADMIRABLE – IF ANYTHING IS EXCELLENT OR PRAISEWORTHY – THINK ABOUT SUCH THINGS. 💖🙏🏻📖☝️📖🙏🏻💖

1 Kings 3

Read 1 Kings 3 – What do you want?   What an enormous question.  Imagine the Lord God Almighty comes to you in a dream and says,  “What do you want? Ask, what shall I give you? ”  Solomon is pretty smart, even before God makes him the wisest man to ever live.   He considers his life, what is needed and what is lacking. The Lord is so pleased, he adds more than Solomon even asked for… Beloved, God never blesses ‘just a little’.  This is the same God who loves you, and who sent rescue in Jesus for you.  What is your heart’s desire? SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND ALL THESE THINGS WILL BE ADDED TO YOU. Matthew 6:33💖🙏🏻⚓🤓

Read 1 Kings 2:13-46

Part 2 – Read 1 Kings 2:13-46 – King Solomon ties up the requests of his father with decisive discernment.  Our chapter closes with the words, “So the kingdom was now firmly in Solomon’s grip.”(2:46)  May you be both decisive and discerning as you step into the lead of your life.  What needs to be dealt with or cleaned up?  p.s. I am NOT advocating for executions, haha – rather,  sit down in prayer and ask Jesus what needs to be dealt with.  Does your life bring him glory?  Take stock of your life and establish your kingdom.🙏🏻🤲📑💝📊👸🙏🏻

1 Kings 2:1-12

Read 1 Kings 2:1-12 – Part one of two… or maybe three.

We are privileged to have an account of King David’s last words, his legacy is handed to his son, the newly appointed King Solomon, who will be known as the wisest man to have ever lived.  These are words we do not want to rush through.

“I am going where everyone on earth must someday go.  Take courage and be a man.” David prepares Solomon(2:2) and my heart translates:  Let me go – carry your own torch.  Grief can redefine a person.  Do not hold so tightly to those who have passed on before you that you miss out on leading your own life.

David charges Solomon to adhere to God’s laws, and gives him a few practical matters regarding people who must be dealt with:  Joab (2 Samuel 3) and Shimei (2 Samuel 16) for treachery – and Barzillai for kindness(2 Samuel 19).  King David dies and is buried with his ancestors in the City of David.

I just need a moment, how about you?  We have walked alongside this lowly shepherd, who killed lions and bears, and was chosen by God Almighty.  David, who slayed the giant, Goliath the Philistine, who waited patiently for King Saul to die, though he spent great effort hunting David and wanting him dead.  David, who would lead Israel through turmoil, who would sin and repent… King David, the man after God’s own heart has completed his time on earth.

1 Kings 1

Read 1 Kings 1 – We are rejoining the great King David today.

David is in the sunset years, old, but still king and capable of calling the shots.  His son, Adonijah, overrides his father’s position and makes himself the self appointed king… Just as his brother, Absalom, attempted in 2 Samuel 15.

We get some insight into this audacious behavior as we learn that David never disciplined his son(1:6).  Dads – you matter so much!  Your presence in you little children’s lives will affect them for all of theirs – for better or worse.

Nathan… remember Nathan?  He was the prophet who confronted David on his sin with Bathsheba (2 Sam 12).  He now teams with Bathsheba to remind David of his vow to make Solomon the next king.  David makes Solomon king, he is anointed, the rams horn is blown, and Solomon takes the throne.  Adonijah’s ruse is fully exposed, his guest flee the banquet, and he pleads with King Solomon not to kill him.

Life is busy!  Good things and not so good things are happening all around us. David declared, “As surely as the Lord lives, who has rescued me from every danger,”(1:29).  Beloved, may you look in your past and see God’s rescue throughout, and use that to light the way into your fearless future.

Time Out From Time Out

August 23, 2021

I have been grounded like a back-talking teenager from a stupid summer cold that has ruled my life for the past month.  NJ deserves and demands clarity.  Our only time together has been a few dustings and a hopeful check on her tire pressure.  It was sadly down… her version of running a fever.

My son was going to ride his Tiger 900 to work… his bike is named Coyote… Coyote the Tiger.  I decided to join him.  His work is just 2 miles away, and I feel my best in the morning hours.

At the first turn, I was overjoyed!  It is ¼ mile to the stop sign.  First gear, click, clutch, second gear, click, clutch, throttle, clutch, click, break for the stop sign.  All clear, turn, first gear, second, third, wind on my face… we are becoming one again. I lean left and right, giving her tires a hug.

In less than 3 minutes, we turn into his parking lot for work.  I am not ready to be done.

I turn right on Adams, so I can take Placentia home.  It has these curves running through Banning Ranch, just prior to Estancia High School that feel like a country road.  I am talking about a stretch that might be as long as a mile, but it brings me joy.  I lean with the curves.  I inhale the scent of dry grass.  It is cloudy this morning, a blanket of grey keeps the summer morning cool.  I feel the air all around me in my mesh summer jacket.

I turn right again onto Victoria.  Victoria sits high through Costa Mesa, then drops going into Huntington Beach, giving an awesome view of the Pacific as I cross the Santa Ana River towards home.  The air cools and the aroma of the sea comes upon me.  I don’t want to be done.  I don’t want my time with NancyJean to end, I feel alive and strong when I ride.

My First Love

Poppy was my first my motorcycle.

She was a sporty, bright orange machine… actually referred to as a naked sport bike, the KTM 390 Duke…. Poppy Duke, as I came to know her… perhaps the great- great- granddaughter of the General and distant niece to Daisy Duke of Dukes of Hazard fame…. one can only speculate.

She made me feel like the great-aunt who has taken in her wild niece for the summer.  I owned her for about a year, but one never forgets a first love.  Here are some memories….

Her youthful spirit of adventure softens my cautious sedentary existence. I am awakened to senses long buried under the day to day.

When I am with her life flashes like one watercolor painting after the next. Beauty, color and texture let me in like a child running through a museum. The curves and hills and valleys each exposing new wonders. The open straightaways invite speed and daring while passing the summer fields…. amber fields dancing like the sea, hillsides of grapevines soon to be harvested, fruit trees in tidy rows like soldiers marching in an ancient parade.

Clutch, shift, brake, throttle… its starting to come more naturally now. The learning curve has been slower than expected. Poppy has endured many rides far beneath her capabilities, but it won’t always be this way.

I am changing because of her. My peripheral vision is becoming sharper. My eyes scan the road for my next move while staying alert for deer who may dare to cross my path, potholes and rocks abound.

An unusually black rock appears and I calculate to avoid it, but my senses heighten… could it be? It’s walking. It’s hairy. It’s not a rock, but a tarantula! I seem to hold my breath and scream at the same time, “DID YOU SEE THAT? EWWW EWWW IT WAS A TARANTULA !!” My voice goes right into my husband’s helmet. He is 100 feet in front of me. He is envious for having missed it. I wish I could unsee it.

I remember that they can jump…. could I have frightened the little guy into jumping on my pants? I extend my leg, not knowing what my reaction will be if I see him. Tragedy could really come that unexpectedly. Panic is my enemy. But there is no cause for it. He is not my unwelcome passenger.

“You know they can jump, ” my husband teases unaware that I’ve just covered that scenario. He’s a funny man. Most of the time.

The turns are tighter now. Clutch! Shift! Light on the brake! Increase the throttle! Lean! Push! The spider was a good distraction, my body is responding to the road more naturally.

The sky is blue. Yesterday the coast was blanketed in fog, but today holds great promise. Magically the sapphire Pacific appears. My face actually hurts from smiling into the cushion of my helmet for so long. I can just barely feel my fingers from all that’s been required of them.  I hold on too tightly still, a rookie problem that is only resolved with time.

It’s a funny thing with riding. I have always despised this road; I am prone to car sickness. I endured it for the beach…. and the Jalama burger. But now it is the road is my favorite part…. Poppy loves it too.

1 Peter 5

Read 1 Peter 5 – Treasure’s galore – There is great godly wisdom in this short passage.

Elders, lead well, with a willing heart. Jesus has entrusted these people to you.  Young ones, accept their authority (youth is so full of pride), live humble.  And then, two of the my favorite morsels of wisdom:

First, cast all your cares upon the Lord, for he cares for you(5:7).  Isn’t that awesome?  Over and over the bible instructs to fear not.  But when worry does creep in, what does one do?  That’s right – hand it right over to the Lord!

Second, Peter states the fact, so there is no need to be surprised, but prepared and alert because the devil prowls like a lion, looking for someone to devour.  He instructs believers to stand firm against him and be strong in the faith(5:8-9).  There is something empowering about being ready.  So, be ready.

Peter closes with a summary, “My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you.  Stand firm in this grace.(5:12).”

Friends, will you stand firm in His grace?  Write that on your heart today.  Stand firm in His grace.  It’s a great calling.

Tomorrow we will pick up in the life of King David with 1 Kings.  It is the book after 2 Samuel, around the ⅓ mark of the Old Testament.

1 Peter 4

Read 1 Peter 4 – Jesus, Jesus, Jesus –

Whenever you are deciding right from wrong, look to Jesus.  Whenever you are in a season of trial, and Satan starts whispering doubt, look to Jesus.  He is the Author and Finisher of our faith(see Hebrews 12:2 “Looking to Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”) – Jesus is like no other, for he has literally “been there, done that” in terms of suffering, betrayal, and temptation. There is nothing you may face that Jesus did not encounter.

In verse 4:2 we get a picture of freedom that may be a challenge to imagine to the immature of faith, yet when you take on the attitude of being anxious to do the will of God, life takes on a delightful, powerful, purposeful dynamic!

“The end of the world is coming soon.  Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.”(4:7)  Talk about a call of duty!  What does your prayer life look like?  Don’t keep it on hold for desperate situations – No, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.

Use your God-given gifts wisely(4:10).  If you don’t know what yours are, volunteer for everything; they will rise to the surface.  And again, Peter stresses that suffering will happen.  Trust your life to the God who created you, for he will never fail you(4:12-19).

1 Peter 3

Read 1 Peter 3 – Godly living – It is so different from what human nature wants to do.

But if you read through verse one – Wives must accept the authority of their husbands – and unwrap what that truly means, you will find the beauty of a new way of living.  You can trust the Lord with all those battles and animosity that might be in your heart as you lead with that gentle quiet spirit that is so beautiful to Jesus.

And husbands must give honor to his wife… for she is equal(2:7). The world would make you think less than, but that is not how God designed marriage.   When both do as they ought, it is a beautiful marriage.  And each must do their part regardless of the other… no saying, “Well, when he/she…”

Beyond marriage, Peter instructs that all of us should be of one mind, tender hearted and humble.  He quotes Psalm 34:12-16 when he says, “For the Scriptures say,” (3:10-12).  He reminds once more that suffering for doing good has eternal purpose, and that Jesus led the way in this for ultimate good.

We end with a mystery.  Did you catch it?  “So he went and preached to the spirits in prison -” speaking of those who died during the flood of Noah.  What was that like?  Have they been waiting all this time?  Was redemption then possible for them?  I like to think so, but none of us will fully know until we get to heaven, if it matters at all then.  I LOVE a good mystery – I love how this draws me into the fullness of 1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.  Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”  Live right, the best is yet to come!
