Psalm 21

Read Psalm 21 – Praise the LORD, Jesus is King!  “How the king rejoices in your strength, O LORD!  He shouts with joy because you give him victory.  For you have given him his heart’s desire; you have withheld nothing he requested.” :1-2

These verses had the present meaning of David’s joy as he reflected on the LORD’s hand over his life.  They also had the future meaning as Jesus walked this earth, completing all he set out to, conquering sin and death, rising again in glory… “You welcomed him back with success and prosperity.  You placed a crown of finest gold on his head.” :3  God’s Word is incredible, multifaceted, true, rich, layered, timeless and perfect.

“You will capture all your enemies.  Your strong right hand will seize all who hate you.” :8  ALL always means ALL.  It does not mean SOME or MOST; All means ALL.  All the enemies of God will have their day of reckoning.  So many people hate God today… it shocks and saddens me, yet it is no surprise to the LORD and one day they will be blotted out like a mosquito.

My husband and I went to the movies last night.  It was an action film about dinosaurs, and the corruption of man trying to play god… the bad guys always want to rule the world.  The good guys prevailed, preserving life, even the dinosaurs.  Some of the bad guys saw the error of their ways, repented and began life brand new.  Other bad guys were destroyed by the very thing they sought to control.  It was silly entertainment, but reality is not so far off.

Beloved, may your joy in the LORD be a light for those headed for destruction.

Psalm 10

Read Psalm 10 – It’s hard to watch, isn’t it?  Sometimes wicked people prosper while the faithful struggle.  David observes the arrogance and utter lack of humanity of the prosperous as he intercedes for the afflicted.

As you were reading, was your heart stirred to anger for the lack of reverence for God and man David described?  Or did you find yourself jealous of their success?  Yikes, right, that makes it personal.  Beloved, let those questions hit home.  Let the Holy Spirit open your eyes to your own heart as you read God’s Word.

The psalm closes with, “The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.  You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.” :16-18  First of all, whose land is it?  That’s right – the earth and everything in it belongs to God.  And what does God do for the afflicted?  That’s right – he hears, encourages, listens and defends!  Scripture says, “If God is for us, who can stand against us?” Romans 8:31

Deuteronomy 17

Read Deuteronomy 17 – Courts and kings –  The LORD outlines how justice is to be decided in :2-13.  It must be on the testimony of more than one witness and if it is too hard to decide in the local court they were to take it to the place the LORD would choose. (:8) Beloved, this shows how close their relationship with the LORD was.  He was their King and he would lead them to the Levitical priest or judge on duty to decide the case. (:9)  Justice was to be decisive and acted on immediately.  And if anyone was arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or priest – that person was to die.  God gives the explanation that this would purge evil from Israel and hearing about it would cause people to be afraid, saving them from such arrogance.

It is interesting that the LORD added this part on choosing a king.  He was their King, yet he knew they would eventually desire a human king as other nations had.  His requirements are excellent – Israel could have saved so much grief by adhering to them… and I can’t help long for a president in our nation who would meet them. 

The king was to personally copy this body of instructions on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests and read from it daily. (:18)  That is a king worthy of leading a nation!  

Beloved, with this all fresh in your heart, why don’t you take some time to pray for our courts and government.  It is not too late to return to the LORD!
